Scientists at Sumitomo Electric have created a semiconductor laser that emits green light without using filters.
That’s according to nikkei.net, which said the breakthrough means that semiconductor lasers will at last be available for the three primary colours.
The wire reported that the research will be published tomorrow by the Japan Society of Applied Physics, and samples will be ready during the company’s current financial year.
The laser light has a wavelength of 531 nanometers at room temperature using a technique which involves gallium nitride crystals, said nikkei.net.
Sumitomo will be first to market in a race which involved competition from Nichia and Rohm.
The laser has a number of applications including being used in TVs and in projectors. The article is here (subscription needed).
