Fulfilling the most requested change to Google’s video sharing site, Youtube has finally increased the length of videos that users can upload to a more accommodating 15 minutes.
“Without question, the number one requested feature by our creators is to upload videos longer than 10 minutes. We’ve heard you, and today we’re pleased to announce that we’ve increased the upload limit to 15 minutes,” wrote Youtube project manager Joshua Siegel in an official blog post.
One of the main reasons that Youtube has kept video length restricted is because of the potential of users uploading long pieces of copyrighted content. However, that concern has dimished as Google has improved the site’s Content ID system that can automatically flag videos that match content that copyright owners have provided to Youtube.
Other video sharing sites, like Veoh, do not have any sort of limits for file size or clip length. However, when it comes to user-uploaded video site, Youtube has an obviously dominating market share.
Today’s announcement did not mention the site’s 100 MB file size limit, so even though the total duration of a video can be up to 15 minutes now, it still has to fit in at under 100 MB.
