Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-N.Y.) has tearfully admitted to posting lewd and inappropriate pictures of himself on Twitter at a rather dramatic press conference at the Sheraton Hotel in Midtown Manhattan.
“Last Friday night I tweeted a photograph of myself that I intended to send as direct message as part of a joke to a woman in Seattle,” Weiner confessed.
“Once I realized I posted it to Twitter, I panicked, I took it down and said that I had been hacked. I then continued with that story… to stick to that story which was a hugely regrettable mistake.”
The disgraced Democratic congressman apologized to the Seattle student and said he was “sorry for the pain” the incident caused his wife, family, constituents, friends, supports and staff.
Weiner also acknowledged “engaging in several inappropriate conversations” on various social networking sites with women he met online, exchanging “messages and photos of an explicit nature” with about six individuals over the last three years.
“To be clear, I have never met any of these women or have had any physical relationships at any time,” he emphasized.
“[Yes], this is my own personal mistake [and] a deep weakness that I have demonstrated.”
However, Weiner insisted he would not resign and reiterated he had not broken any laws.
“[Clearly], this was a mistake and I am very sorry for it and take it very seriously…”
