The long abandoned anthology series has seemingly resurfaced as a pitch.
Deadline says they’ve been told there is a pitch being made to the major networks about a new Tales from the Crypt series. The idea is being pitched to all the major networks and broadcast outlets, but the only one who has seemingly showed interest so far is Cinemax.
Tales from the Crypt was one of the earliest HBO original programs.
It was based on the 50s era comic books of the same name, in which a ghoulish Cryptkeeper hosts a series of horror adventures with some reoccurring characters.
The HBO series turned it into an anthology, in which different writers and actors, and even different producers would submit one-shot hour-long horror stories. The only connection among them was the host.
The new pitch apparently wishes to readapt the material from the source, bringing the characters up from the 50s, but otherwise, leaving it mostly intact.
“It will be an ongoing series that uses characters from the comic books in a more modern context,” Deadline quoted Andrew Cosby as saying.
“It’s all about continually elevating the genre, for both existing fans of the source material and mainstream audiences.”
Cosby, who has worked on several series for Syfy is making this pitch along-side Gil Adler, one of the producers from the original Tales from the Crypt series.
Of course, it’s entirely possible that no one will pick up the newly proposed relaunch of the once popular series.
