It’s only been about a year since the recent Wolf Man reboot, but now it’s apparently time for another.
A while back, Universal announced that they had a script from Michael Tab, which would become a sequel to last year’s The Wolfman.
Possibly due to the poor critical reception of that film, however, the studio has changed its mind, but chose not to scrap the film entirely.
Instead, Universal this week announced that they are having the script rewritten as an original film, which will not tie into the recent stinker at all.
It will take its inspiration and any tie-ins it may want from the original 1941 film The Wolf Man instead.
The Wolf Man was a film adaptation of the famous folklore tale of the werewolf.
Therein, Lon Chaney plays Larry Talbot, an aristocrat’s son, who returns to his family home after the death of his brother.
When he is attacked by a Werewolf, he takes on the curse himself.
He struggles, and ultimately fails, to contain the condition, ending the film on a downer note, as Talbot’s own father is forced to kill him to stop him from attacking a local girl.
No word if it’s Tabb himself or another writer who is crafting the new script, nor do we know precicely what part of the original story it will match up to.
It could be a prequel, a sequel, or a remake. All we know is that it’s tied directly to the 1941 film somehow.
With the surprisingly excellent Teen Wolf coming out of MTV, perhaps there will be a bigger audience for a fresh take on The Wolf Man, but the real success of this film will depend on the director they saddle it with.
