MTV has released a short video of an impromptu interview with J.J. Abrams regarding the upcoming Star Trek film.
It seems as if the new film is on track with all the actors in place. Although Abrams remained relatively tight-lipped about the next Star Trek movie, he did hint the film would not be connected directly to the last one.
“I think the most important thing to remember is that it doesn’t matter if anyone has seen the first one or not,” he explained.
“It doesn’t matter what the first one was, in a way. This has to be a movie that stands on its own. It’s about starting over, but at the same time, holding on to the things that worked in the first one.”
I really hope that doesn’t mean what it could mean. Yes, I might be reading too much into it, but if he’s saying that the next Star Trek film will be another sort of reboot, that’s terribly disappointing, and doesn’t make any sense at all.
Hopefully, he only means that it will ‘stand on its own’ in a relative way, like the way the original Star Trek films stood on their own. The stories were all in the same continuity, and it helped to know the characters already, since the did not spend a lot of time on origins, but the specific conflict of each film was not necessarily a continuation of the conflict of the film before.
Sure, that’s great, but would obviously be a given. Of course, you would have to make the next Star Trek film work that way, so why even say it?
No word yet on the relative number of lens flares, but at this point, I hope they stick to their guns, and keep the lens flares coming in the next film. It’s part of the style of the new Star Trek, and I would miss it if it went away.
Whatever is going on, Abrams promised we would be getting some real details in the next month or so.
The Star Trek sequel was originally planned for Summer 2012, but was postponed due to other projects Abrams was working on over the last year or so, namely Super 8. There is currently no confirmed release date.
