San Bruno, CA – From now on, everyone can get paid for their fifteen minutes of fame.
In an extension of its Partnership Program, YouTube has announced that the makers of popular individual videos will be invited to start earning from them.
“To determine whether a particular video is eligible for monetization, we look at factors like the number of views, the video’s virality and compliance with the YouTube Terms of Service,” says the company in its blog. “If your video is eligible for monetization, you will receive an email and see an “Enable Revenue Sharing” message next to your video on the watch page, as well as in other places in your account.”
YouTube will then sell advertising against the video and pay a share to the lucky filmmaker, who will be helped to set up a Google AdSense account. It isn’t giving a figure, but the sums aren’t likely to be huge.
To start with, the company will only be offering ‘monetarization’ in the US, but it says it hopes to roll it out in other countries soon.
The opportunity is expected to apply to tens of thousands of videos – but not those containing copyrightable material, which will eliminate a lot of videos which contain backing music.
