Video game sales slumped in April

Market research company the NPD Group said that US sales of video games dropped sharply in April, by 23 percent compared to April in 2008.

Sales of gaming software amounted to $510.7 million, sales of hardware fell to $391.6 million, and sales of accessories also fell.

Although the NPD Group said that the credit crunch had some effect on the sales, the real reason was that last year Mario Kart and Grand Theft Auto 4 boosted sales.

As for the gaming consoles, Nintendo stayed at number one, the Microsoft Xbox 360 was at number two, while the Playstation 2 and the Playstation 3 occupied the third and fourth positions.

Nintendo released its financial results last week, and turned in a profit, boosted by sales of the Wii and the DS2.
