Prince of Persia: highest-grossing "video game movie" ever

It’s a designation that is kind of like an award for being the “most glamorous prison,” but Disney’s silver screen adaptation of the classic video game Prince of Persia has officially done better at the box office than any other video game-based movie before it.

Whether it’s the absolute abomination of the Super Mario Bros movie or the abysmal box office numbers of Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within, which caused the demise of an entire movie studio, video game movies aren’t exactly known for their theatrical success.

One of the movies that did manage to stand out was Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, which did not receive high praise from critics but did admirably in the box office with around $274 million in ticket sales. That made it the resounding #1 video game movie of all time… until now.

As of this weekend, though, Price of Persia: The Sands of Time has eclipsed Tomb Raider with total worldwide box office sales of over $300 million, as pointed out by SlashFilm.com

While that is almost unheard of for a movie based on a video game franchise, it is a low number for such a high-profile Disney title, and sales are below what was expected for the summer popcorn flick.

Regardless, Prince of Persia fans should be happy to know that their favorite video game has been recognized quite highly by the moviegoing community.
