Sony’s flagship Playstation-branded 3D TV is now available for consumers to pre-order.
The TV was first announced at the annual E3 video game trade show earlier this year. At the show, Sony continued to stress the importance of 3D gaming content in spite of the reality that sales of 3D TVs has been more sluggish than expected, and has been complicated by an emergence of conflicting 3D formats.
But Sony believes that gamers have the ability to make 3D mainstream, as they are usually the most willing to jump into the next advance in home entertainment technology.
The Playstation-branded set is not only marketed for that gaming audience, but it also tackles one of the biggest complaints about 3D TVs – the price. The 24-inch set will retail for just $499.
But wait, there’s more! The TV also comes packed with an HDMI cable, a pair of 3D glasses, and a copy of the game Motorstorm Apocalypse, which has some of the most heralded 3D graphics available on the PS3.
So it’s quite a deal, although the display is only 24 inches. And to add to the value, Sony has announced anyone who pre-orders the TV will also receive a copy of the PS3 game Resistance 3. So that’s nearly $200 worth of goodies packed in with a $500 TV.
The Playstation TV also carries another interesting piece of technology – Sony’s proprietary Simulview standard. This allows two players sitting next to one another to see completely different images on the same set.
So, if you’re playing a multiplayer game, player 1 will see a different screen than player 2. It’s a pretty cool idea and everyone is curious to see just how well it actually works.
