Nintendo is currently putting the finishing touches on a second-gen Wii console, which is slated to make its first appearance at E3 2011 in June.
“Nintendo has decided to launch in 2012 a system to succeed Wii, which the company has sold 86.01 million units in a consolidated shipment basis between its launch in 2006 and the end of March 2011,” the Japanese-based company confirmed in an official statement.
“We will show a playable model of the new system and announce more specifications at the E3 show, which will be held June 7-9, 2011 in Los Angeles.”
Although Nintendo declined to release any additional information about the upcoming console, IGN speculates that the Wii 2 will be powered by a more advanced graphics chip than either the PS3 or Xbox 360.
In addition, the Wii 2 could use high-tech controllers with built-in touch panel displays – making the controllers almost like miniature game systems themselves.
Nintendo has yet to price its new console, but IGN believes the system could be priced between $350 and $400.
