Add another title to the slate of games coming to the Wii U – a high-definition version of Pikmin.
The unique game in which players traverse colorful planets in order to rescue as many creatures as possible was one of the few franchises that actually found success on Nintendo’s ill-fated Gamecube console.
It created a sort of cult following, and for the past four and a half years gamers have been hoping to see the franchise make its way to the Wii – something Nintendo had promised back in 2007.
In a special roundtable presentation at E3 this week, Pikmin creator Shigeru Miyamoto backtracked on that promise, saying, “Well, Pikmin was a Wii game we were working on.”
“However, as we’ve been working on Wii U hardware and I’ve been looking at those high-definition graphics and that beautiful controller, I’ve been getting the feeling I wanted to see Pikmin there instead,” 1UP.com quoted Miyamoto as saying.
2010 marks the 10-year anniversary of Pikmin, and apparently the plan was to finally release a new Wii version in honor of that milestone. But instead, all the development that went into the Wii will be transferred to the new console.
Hopefully, with that much development progress already made, there won’t be a long wait for the new Pikmin title after the Wii U comes out. Maybe it’ll even be a launch game.
Nintendo isn’t quite ready to show footage of any first-party Wii U games, but it has confirmed that Super Smash Bros will be making its way to the new console. We’re sure to get new details over the next several months.
