Peter Molyneux, the man behind such high-concept video games as Black & White and Fable, says that Sony’s Playstation Move is not really distinguishable from the Wii’s motion controls.
In an interview with UGO, Molyneux said, “I find it hard in my mind to differentiate between the Sony Move and the Wii… I know Sony and Nintendo would argue that they are different, but they kind of seem the same.”
The comments no doubt echo what many gamers think. The Move controller looks similar to the Wii Remote and it does not, in its overall scope, appear to do much more than the Wii.
Sony says the Move is more sophisticated than the Wii because it uses a camera to track player motion and can capture full depth of motion while the Wii just recognizes simple 2D movements.
But the jury is still out on whether or not Microsoft’s Kinect, which uses no controller and just body movement, will be viable as a serious video game platform.
“It would be very easy for [Microsoft] to have created something like the Wii, but instead they did go that extra mile and they said, ‘No, we’re going to make that huge step,'” said Molyneux.
The Wii made motion-controlled gaming mainstream, and both Sony and Microsoft are trying to one-up Nintendo’s console. It will be a battle of the motion controls with Move and Kinect both launch later this year.
