Redmond, WA – Despite ongoing staff cuts, Microsoft is pressing ahead with its plans for world domination in the gaming arena.
Microsoft has snapped up Vancouver-based BigPark, a gaming studio that began life under Don Mattrick, before he jumped ship to become the Redmond outfit’s Interactive Entertainment Business boss. Financial details of the deal were not disclosed.
BigPark has already been working closely with Microsoft Game Studios (MGS) on a new Xbox 360 product to be debuted at E3 this year. CEO Hanno Lemke, previously with Distinctive Software and Electronic Arts, where he was responsible for such titles as Need for Speed and Skate, will report to MGS head Phil Spencer.
“We are delighted by the opportunity to welcome the BigPark team into Microsoft Game Studios,” said Spencer. “The team is composed of some of the most experienced and creative minds working in the industry today. The combination of the BigPark and Microsoft Game Studios talent pools will be an accelerant for growth and innovation.”
“Given our shared passion for breaking new ground in the online space and producing best-in-class gaming experiences, our partnership with Microsoft over the last year has been a natural fit, which we’ve thoroughly enjoyed,” added Lemke.
