The next big deal for 3D master James Cameron may be a video game.
Cameron, who shook the world and single-handedly catapulted the 3D revolution, recently said he believes video games are the next big thing to lead the charge for a third dimension in home entertainment.
The director said he has a particular affinity for the 3DS, which uses an autostereoscopic, glasses-free display.
“These single-viewing devices that are engaging the person to play these video games will drive a lot of investment in autostereoscopic displays. That technology will trickle up to the larger 3D displays that will be used for home viewing and gaming,” said Cameron in a Yahoo interview.
In addition to the 3DS, the PS3 has also been championing 3D gaming, but it requires an expensive set-up at home with a 3D TV and 3D glasses. At least for now. In the future, it could be adjusted for glasses-free 3D TVs.
If that trend does start to emerge, Cameron could come up with the killer app. “I’d love to do an MMORPG experience inside the Avatar universe. And I would like to see it authored in 3D. I’d like to see people doing gameplay in 3D, so that’s something that we’re looking to do. But we’re not active on that yet,” he said.
Cameron absolutely does not like glasses-required 3D in the home, however, so it’s unlikely we’ll see a 3D Avatar game anytime soon.
“One of the big barriers to 3D right now is that you have to wear glasses in the home. Home viewing is very different than movie theater viewing. I don’t think we’ll ever get rid of the glasses in movie theaters… but we’re going to get rid of them at home because it’s a different viewing model type,” he explained.
