Games market goes into freefall

Port Washington, NY – Video game sales are continuing to plummet, according to market research from NPD.

Despite predictions that the recession would keep us all indoors giving ourselves repetitive strain injury, sales of games and consoles in July were 29 percent down on last year.

It’s the fifth consecutive month of decline.

The Wii remained the top-selling console, followed by Microsoft’s Xbox 360 and Sony’s Playstation 3. But only around 250,000 Wii consoles were sold – less than half the figure for last July.

Nintendo’s Sports Resort game for the Wii was the top seller, at 508,000 copies.

The firm is still perky about the future. It points out that a number of new titles are in the pipeline, including  The Beatles: Rock Band, Halo 3: ODST, and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, which could boost sales later in the year.
