Family Guy escapes curse of Redmond

Fans of Family Guy can rest easy in their La-Z-Boys as Microsoft announces it’s pulling out of sponsoring a 30 minute special scheduled to air on Fox on Sunday, November 8.

The special was due to be sponsored by Microsoft to the exclusion of all other advertising content and feature gags about Windows 7. Now Redmond has seen some early footage of the show, it’s pulling the sponsorship because it doesn’t like what it sees.

At the time the deal was originally announced, Microsoft said that the show would feature “unique Windows 7-branded programming that blends seamlessly with show content.”

At the time, we expressed fears that Microsoft’s appalling track record of making cringe-worthy ads would effectively destroy Family Guy’s credibility. Indeed, the only good thing to have come out of Microsoft’s ghastly Gates & Seinfeld double act ads is that the prodigiously-untalented performer hasn’t been seen in public since. Bill Gates appears to have vanished as well.

“We initially chose to participate in the Seth and Alex variety show based on the audience composition and creative humor of Family Guy,” said Microsoft in a statement. “But after reviewing an early version of the variety show, it became clear that the content was not a fit with the Windows brand.

“We continue to have a good partnership with Fox, Seth MacFarlane and Alex Borstein and are working with them in other areas.  We continue to believe in the value of brand integrations and partnerships between brands, media companies and talent.”

Microsoft says it will continue to advertise on Fox and Family Guy, and that a 12-week Windows 7 college tour hosted by the Stewie and Brian characters of Family Guy will go ahead as planned.

As Stewie would say, “Hello, mother. I come bearing a gift. I’ll give you a hint. It’s in my diaper and it’s not a copy of Windows 7 Ultimate.”
