Sony’s PlayStation 3 console was unceremoniously cracked just a week ago by the fail0verflow team. And w00t! The first custom firmware for hacked PS3s – coded by KaKaRoToKS – hit the ‘Net yesterday.
So, what does the firmware do?
Well, it adds an “Install Package Files” option to the Game section of the XMB, opening the door to homebrew app installs.
“This firmware will not (yet) allow you to run the currently available homebrew application. Once the homebrew developers re-package their files in a ‘retail’ .pkg format with signed executable, then it will work. This should be coming soon thanks to the work of the fail0verflow team,” KaKaRoToKS explained in a blog post.
“Since the kernel is left unmodified, this means that this custom firmware is really meant for future homebrew installation, and it will not allow piracy. I plan on keeping it that way.”
However, KaKaRoToKS emphasized that the above-mentioned patch file was only a “first attempt” to code custom firmware.
