Warner Bros Interactive has officially confirmed that it is working on a sequel to very well-received Batman: Arkham Asylum on all major gaming platforms.
Gamers will have to wait a while before they see the sequel on store shelves. Batman: Arkham City won’t be available until the fall of 2011.
Last year, Arkham Asylum rocked the worlds of comic book fans and gamers alike as a very sophisticated, almost perfectly executed game that is so far against the norm for what has historically been a genre of mediocre comic-inspired titles.
However, Warner Bros stopped pushing away the rights to its properties to low-budget third-party developers and just within the last couple years created its own internal publishing studio. Arkham Asylum was one of the team’s flagship titles.
A statement from Warner Bros describes the new game as taking place in “the new maximum security ‘home’ for all of Gotham City’s thugs, gangsters and insane criminal masterminds.”
Without question, the release of the blockbuster hit The Dark Knight absolutely spurred sales of the video game, even though the two were not directly related.
But it was The Dark Knight that took a new look into the universe of Batman that really struck a chord with a lot of mainstream moviegoers – not just the standard geek crowd. Arkham Asylum managed to capture the same kind of attention with a very unique and robust gameplay style.
Arkham City, like Arkham Asylum, will be available on the PC, Xbox 360, and PS3.
