Be gentle, now: an Australian politician said yesterday that he reckons gamers are more scary than bikers.
“I feel that my family and I are more at risk from gamers than we are from the outlaw motorcycle gangs who also hate me,” South Australia’s Attorney-General Michael Atkinson told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.
“The outlaw motorcycle gangs haven’t been hanging around my doorstep at 2:00 am, a gamer has.”
With the future of Australian gamers in his hands, Atkinson’s opinion matters. He’s currently considering a proposal to lift a national ban on adult-only games.
At the moment, while 18-rated films are permitted in Australia, there’s a ban on games with the same rating. Lifting the ban would require the approval of all national, state and territory ministers, meaning that Atkinson could veto the whole deal.
A group called Gamers4Croydon is calling for the ban to be lifted, saying the current rating system is not only restrictive but confusing. It says Atkinson is allowing his personal opinion to outweigh independent research.
“We shouldn’t be surprised. Mr Atkinson’s stock in trade is generalising and demonising,” says president Chris Prior. “Mr Atkinson seems more interested in his own prejudice than being a good representative.”
