What would have been one of the biggest holiday titles this year will instead come out some time in the middle of 2012.
Twisted Metal, a re-invisioning of the classic PS One vehicle-combat game, has been pushed back due to larger than expected development challenges for the studio Eat Sleep Play.
“A lot of dedicated, supportive, passionate Twisted Metal fans have been waiting for the return of Calypso’s demented contest for a long time but the truth is: we’re just not ready yet,” wrote Eat Sleep Play co-founder and outspoken gaming pundit David Jaffe.
Jaffe’s company had already made the ambitious move of announcing a specific release date for Twisted Metal – October 4. That would have given it enough time for the die-hard fans to grab it as soon as possible while still making it fresh for the holiday rush.
Fans will no doubt appreciate that Jaffe and his team would rather ensure the game is polished than try to squeeze it out in time for the holiday revenue.
As Jaffe assured, “Thing is, you gotta trust me when I tell you that — with this extra time for tuning and polish — the game is going to be so much better than it already is.”
He made the announcement in a post on the official Playstation Blog, and commenters are largely okay with it.
“Take your time David it’s better to release a polished game than a rushed have a**ed game,” wrote one user. “Yes it does suck that the game will ship later than we thought, but I believe in Jaffe and the Eat Sleep Play folks,” wrote another.
As for a specific new release date, no luck there. However, Jaffe said the goal is to get it out in early 2012, so a winter release date is probably the new target.
