A long time back, gaming used to be a communal thing. You’d get together at arcades with your buddies, and even if you didn’t know people there, you were still bound together by the games you liked to play, much like liking the same music and movies. While I’m not sure if it’s the same thing for video game stores, it would be a drag to see them finally go out of business.
Yet this is where the future for game stores may be headed, because the market is moving towards streaming. This could spell trouble for Game Stop, and as the Motley Fool reports, Take Two is fully behind the digital streaming model.
As the Motley Fool website tells us, Take Two’s subcompany, Irrational Games, has closed down, and Take Two swear they’re going to do smaller, digital only games. As the company said in a statement, “In time we will announce a new endeavor with a new goal: to make narrative-driven games for the core gamer that are highly replayable. To foster the most direct relationship with our fans possible, we will focus exclusively on content delivered digitally.”
As the Fool website predicts, the day will come where physical games will no longer exist, and if other companies follow suit, it could mean the end of game stores as well, much like we’ve lost most record stores with people no longer buying CDs.
