Getting any movie made is an enormous task, forget about trying to get a Star Wars movie made. The biggest directors in the business shuddered at the prospect of trying to helm the next Star Wars movie before JJ Abarms finally said yes, and there have definitely been some disturbances in the force since.
There’s no firm release date set up for the next Star Wars movie, but the powers that be at Disney are insisting it be released in 2015. According to the Hollywood Reporter, JJ Abrams and producer Kathleen Kennedy, who now runs Lucas’s empire, have been trying to get the movie moved to 2016 to make sure they have enough time to finish.
In late October, screenwriter Michael Arndt (Toy Story 3) had left the project, and Abrams and Lawrence Kasdan announced they would take over script duties. The Reporter tells us that everyone wants the 2016 extension, but Disney CEO Robert Iger won’t make the change, and there’s currently, as the industry trade puts it, “enormous pressure on all involved.”
If Iger gets his wish and Star Wars comes out in the summer, where it will go up against Avengers 2, Superman Vs Batman, and the last installment of The Hunger Games. (Or should we say those movies will be going up against IT.) But reports of enormous pressure on any movie aren’t exactly news. Again, making any movie is probably the hardest job on earth, so multiply that by several thousand, and that’s probably what trying to get a Star Wars movie off the ground feels like.
