The term supergroup is one we think of in rock n’ roll, not film soundtrack. The first supergroup was probably Blind Faith, which featured Steve Winwood, Eric Clapton and Ginger Baker, and it lasted about six months. Most supergroups usually don’t last long because of the egos involved, and it’s often a case of too many chiefs and no Indians.
Yet perhaps outside of the rock and roll world a supergroup could last, and one has apparently formed for The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Hans Zimmer, who has composed many great scores (The Dark Knight, Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl) will create the amazing music for the next Spider-Man, but this time he will also be joined by Johnny Marr, the legendary guitarist of The Smiths, Pharrel Williams, Dave Stewart from The Eurythmics, and Mike Einziger, guitarist for Incubus.
As Zimmer told Entertainment Weekly, “The thing that united all of us [was] the great love of Spider-Man. With all of these hugely talented people wanting to join us, it was [director] Marc [Webb] who said, ‘Why not start a band?’”
The press is indeed calling this a supergroup, it’s just that usually when we think of supergroups, bands like Asia and the 1987 incarnation of Whitesnake come to mind. It’s doubtful this would sound like either of those bands, and we’re sure Spider-Man will be grateful for this.
It will certainly be interesting to hear what kind of music they will come up with for the next installment of Spider-Man, which hits theaters on May 2, 2014.
