Karl Urban on a Possible Dredd Sequel

As you’ve read on TGD, the big screen adaption of Judge Dredd, simply titled Dredd, has been growing a nice cult following since it came out last year. In fact, there’s even an online fan petition where the geeks can hopefully help bring about a sequel. While Dredd wasn’t a huge hit, it may have done well enough to warrant a sequel, especially with the film’s growing following.

So what does Karl Urban, the man who brought Dredd to life, feel about all of this? As he told IGN and Giant Freakin Robot, he gets recognized more on the streets from playing Dredd than from being in Star Trek. “You know people have discovered the movie after the fact, people have discovered this movie and gone, ‘Wait a minute, this is really, really cool.’”

Urban felt that Dredd failed because “there was no awareness of it…at the time of its release people didn’t know about it.” Urban acknowledged that the fans would love to see Dredd battle the Dark Judges, and that indeed would make a hell of a movie.

It also should be mentioned that even though Dredd wasn’t a hit, it wasn’t ultra expensive to produce (the budget was a reported $50 million), and it reportedly sold over 650,000 copies the first week it was available for home viewing, so maybe another Dredd movie wouldn’t be a risky proposition after all. Stay tuned…
