A new first-person-shooter demo (FPS) seems like it offers the most immersive experience yet for the Oculus rift, allowing players to duck, fire around virtual crates and rotate their guns in their hands.
According to The Verge, the “Hydra Cover Shooter” demo, designed by Australian developer Teddy Lipowitz utilizes two Razer Hydra motion controllers in addition to the Oculus headset. One joystick is designated for moving forwards/backwards and firing, while a wand controller strapped onto the player’s chest controls up and down movement.
According to Lipowitz, the most difficult part of the above-mentioned setup was persuading the headset and motion controllers to communicate reliably.
But once the rig is all set up, players find themselves taking on deadly robots armed with plasma rifles.
“To survive, you’ll need to pop up from behind cover and take your shots, or blind fire around corners and hope to hit them,” Lipowitz told Wired.
As The Verge notes, the positional tracking is so accurate and the virtual reality experience so immersive that Lipowitz warns players to be careful when playing the demo, as “lots of people try to support themselves on the crates when they try to stand up or when leaning up against a column, but find there is nothing there.”
