Godzilla’s Big Return

The last time there was an American version of Godzilla in 1998, it was complete crapola, so we’re hoping the next attempt, which is shooting right now for Legendary Pictures, will be much better. The next Godzilla is due next year, and the big green guy was certainly a topic of interest at Comic Con last weekend.

Godzilla will star Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad), and as Collider reports, director Gareth Edwards told the Comic Con throng that when putting the film together, the primary question was, What is it that makes Godzilla, Godzilla?

“When we were doing this film, we found that, apart from having Godzilla in the movie, you’ve got an infinite canvas and it’s such a rich universe,” Edwards said. “Once you accept the fact that there’s giant creatures, you can kind of do anything you want.”

Godzilla will be fighting other monsters in this new incarnation, but Edwards couldn’t go into detail about exactly which monsters he’ll be battling. Meanwhile, Cranston said, “My discovery of Godzilla was back in the ‘50s…Watching that on TV as a kid was astonishing. Even for its time. I just loved it! For a boy to watch that, it was great destruction and wonderful use of miniatures.”

Warner Brothers and Legendary Picture will be releasing Godzilla May 16, 2014, and here’s hoping the big guy will be wonderfully reinvented for new generations of fans, as well as the old school fans like us who grew up with, and have loved Godzilla for decades now. Please show Godzilla the respect he deserves, but don’t take him too seriously either, a fatal mistake the ’98 Godzilla made. Like they said in Godzilla 2000, there’s probably a little Godzilla in all of us.
