It’s been very difficult to keep details of a movie from leaking on the net, but in the case of many blockbusters, the filmmakers do the pre-emptive strike themselves and let the information out well in advance when the time is right. And when it comes to superhero films, the right time is Comic Con, where plot details for The Avengers 2 were revealed.
Avengers 2 is slated to begin shooting early next year in England, and as The Hollywood Reporter tells us, it will be called The Avengers: Age of Ultron. For those who don’t know Ultron, it’s an artificial intelligence that tries to destroy the world, and it also makes its own android called The Vision, who later becomes an Avenger.
The Age of Ultron comic storyline is a recent one in the Avengers series, and as The Wrap tells us, adapting Ultron “means the next blockbuster team-up will take a decidedly darker and more mind-bending turn…” In Ultron “several key Marvel superheroes are killed or MIA,” but like the upcoming X-Men Days of Future Past, there is also time travel, so perhaps whoever gets killed won’t stay dead for long.
Whedon told the Hollywood Reporter that with Avengers 2, the biggest battle the Avengers will be facing is with “themselves. We’re all our own worst enemy. The creation of the team is not the happy ending. It is the beginning of something that is complex and difficult, and now I get to dig a little deeper. And maybe, while I’m digging, just twist that knife.”
Knowing Joss Whedon’s love of Marvel, it makes sense to us that this is where he’d take the next Avengers flick, and the die-hard Marvel fans will know the Ultron story well and enjoy seeing how Whedon adapted for the big screen. Avengers 2 is due for release on May 1, 2015.
