A team of hackers who previously managed to design a custom chip that circumvented security protocols on Nintendo’s Wii console say they have created a similar key for the recently launched Wii U.
According to a report on CVG, the hackers claim to have “completely reversed the Wii U drive authentication, disk encryption, file system, and everything else needed for this next generation key.”

However, CVG’s Rob Crossley notes, it remains unclear if the console is completely hacked, or if the mod can survive a mandatory system update, to say nothing of running backup games.
Nintendo’s reaction? A spokesperson for the Japanese-based company released the following official statement:
“Nintendo is aware that a hacking group claims to have compromised Wii U security; however, we have no reports of illegal Wii U games nor unauthorized applications playable on the system while in Wii U mode… [We] continuously monitor all threats to [our] products’ security and will use technology and take the necessary legal steps to prevent the facilitation of piracy.”
