Guillermo Del Toro building Crimson’s Peak

This summer, we’re finally going to see Guillermo Del Toro back in action with Pacific Rim, his giant robot movie, which looks very promising.

We just ran a story here on TG about the new posters for Pacific Rim, which feature great robot art. In addition, there is also a graphic novel prequel that sets up the backstory, with a great cover from comics legend Alex Ross. (Del Toro is a big Ross fan, and he geeked out in his presence when they discussed the Rim comic cover).

Of course, this isn’t the only project Del Toro has in the works, and his next film, Crimson Peak, is already taking shape with Jessica Chastain, Emma Stone (the Amazing Spider-Man), Charlie Hunnam (Sons of Anarchy) and Benedict Cumberbatch (Star Trek Into Darkness) being added to the cast.

From what we’ve been able to gather, Crimson Peak is a ghost story, which is interesting considering that Del Toro’s also been thinking about making a movie of the Disney attraction, The Haunted Mansion. The Hollywood Reporter confirms Peak is a “gothic horror story [that] centers on a woman who discovers might not be who he appears to be.”

Meanwhile, Del Toro told Deadline that Crimson Peak is “a very set-oriented, classical but at the same time modern take on the ghost story. It will allow me to play with the conventions of the genre I know and love, and at the same time subvert the old rules.”

Chastain was also in the Latin-flavored horror film Mama, which came out earlier this year. Cumberbatch, as we all know by now, is the villain in Star Trek Into Darkness. Del Toro’s regular writing partner Matthew Robbins (Dragonslayer) co-wrote the screenplay, and the movie is scheduled to shoot in Toronto in January 2014.

Because Legendary is producing both Pacific Rim, and the Godzilla reboot, Collider also asked hypothetically if there could ever be a Godzilla / Pacific Rim crossover, and Del Toro said, “I would hypothetically love to see (giant robot) Jaeger and Godzilla duke it out. That would be almost too much for the human brain!”
