If you’re a horror fan, you’re probably well aware there’s a reboot of Evil Dead coming on April 5, 2013.
We’ve seen the trailer, and frankly we feel it’s still got a ways to prove it can stand in the same league as the original. That said, until we see legit reviews, we’ll keep our minds open as much as possible.
Even with the Dead getting a fresh start, for years fans have repeatedly asked if Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell would ever come back to do another Evil Dead film.
It’s been some twenty years since Army of Darkness, but the fans would still love to see another Dead flick with the original gang one of these days. And considering what a genius Raimi is with DIY filmmaking and special effects, it would be great to see what he could do with a Dead flick today.
Now Raimi is out promoting his latest directorial effort, Oz the Great and Powerful, Collider and Bleeding Cool report that he said he’ll be working on a fourth Evil Dead this summer. Raimi in fact said at a recent press conference, “I would love to make Evil Dead 4. My brother and I plan to work on the script this summer.”
Raimi’s brother Ivan has worked on his scripts with him, and it would also be cool to see Sam’s acting brother Ted back as Henrietta, although that was a very torturous role. Ted was under tons of latex, and he lost a lot of weight sweating like a pig inside that suit, but he made the sacrifice to get his SAG card.
If a fourth Raimi Evil Dead goes forward, I guess the new and old model Deads can coexist, and it would also be nice to see Raimi come back to show everybody how it’s done. At the same time, The Evil Dead gang, Raimi, Campbell, and producer Rob Tapert, all own the original negative of the first film, and they haven’t been in any hurry to do another Dead film just for the sake of it.
As Bruce Campbell told the L.A. Times, “None of us have said no. I think Sam is always tweaking with the idea. People are like, ‘When are you going to do another Evil Dead movie?’ I’m not interested in making a $60-million studio film with a bunch of 24-year-olds telling me what to do.”
Now that Raimi’s proven himself in the A-list Hollywood world with the Spider-Man films, he could probably bring Evil Dead back with little to no interference. If he’s serious about it and is ready to come back, we’ll certainly welcome another Evil Dead with open arms.
