Joss Whedon talks Avengers 2 and S.H.I.E.L.D.

Like JJ Abrams, Joss Whedon is going to be a very busy man for the next couple of years.

He’s currently gearing up for Avengers 2, which along with the next Star Wars movie should be the genre event of 2015. There’s also the S.H.I.E.L.D. series, which should hopefully hold over Avengers fans until the next movie is ready in a few years.

Last time we checked, Whedon was writing the Avengers 2 screenplay, and while he can’t give much away in that regard, he did tell Aint-It-Cool-News, “I can’t do any bigger, so I’m trying to do better.” Whedon’s definitely got his work cut out for him, considering The Avengers is the third biggest movie of all time, but Whedon knows superheroes, and we don’t think he’s going to let the pressure get to him.

Whedon also made similar comments to MTV where he said with the next Avengers, the plan so far is, “Don’t go bigger; go deeper. All of these people have met, so you have that out of the way. Now you can spend your time just digging in, and by digging in, I mean with a scalpel, to cause pain.”

Last month in January, Whedon also told MTV that the outline for the script is done, and the full-blown screenplay should be ready in a few months. (It could even be finished by now for all we know.) “I am pretty excited, I have to say,” Whedon added.

As for the next project Whedon has cooking, S.H.I.E.L.D., the pilot just wrapped right before Valentine’s Day, and as Joss told ScienceFction.com, it will be a “very hopeful show. It’s not about murder, and it’s not about crime, and it’s not people looking into their own belly buttons. It’s about people who are trying to help each other, and that’s one of the things I loved about comic books. They had costumes and the villains were cool [but] they stood for something, and I like doing a show that does that.”

Whedon added, “We’re trying very hard to be true to [Marvel’s] ethos and also to the structure of their universe. So it is definitely a Marvel show. Right now, I want to involve people in the characters that we’ve created for the show and then we’ll worry about [the other stuff].”

While we know The Avengers 2 is coming on May 1, 2015, there’s currently no air date for the S.H.I.E.L.D. pilot, but as ScienceFiction.com speculates, it should be ready for the fall. And again, with Avengers 2 a few years away, the show should help fill the gap very nicely until Whedon and the gang return.
