Rumors hit the net all the time, and some of them actually turn out to be true.
We try not to report on them too much, because who knows if they’re true or not. Even when they are, the studio or the filmmaker will often bust a gut trying to deny them.
So this latest rumor hit the net, and it was actually quickly confirmed by the Empire powers that be. In addition to the new Star Wars trilogy we’ve got coming up, there’s also going to be Star Wars stand alone movies, including a possible film centering around Yoda.
I can still remember when Empire came out and Yoda became one of the most beloved characters in the Star Wars universe. His name has also become synonymous with wisdom in the modern vernacular. When somebody’s really smart, you can call them Yoda, and serious or sarcastically it’s a funny nick-name.
Bob Iger, the CEO of Disney confirmed the news on Tuesday, and told CNBC, “I can confirm to you today that in fact we are working on a few standalone films, Larry Kasdan and Simon Kinberg are both working on film derived from great Star Wars characters that are not part of the overall saga. We still plan to make Star Wars 7, 8, and 9 roughly over a six-year period of time, starting in 2015. But there are going to be a few other films released in that period too.”
When it was announced that Lawrence Kadan, the screenwriter of Empire and Raiders, was coming back to Star Wars, it was indeed great news, but it was unclear what movie he’d be working on. Perhaps he’ll indeed be bringing Yoda to life again in one of the Star Wars spin-offs, but there’s also the question of whether this could end up being too many Star Wars films.
Before you knew it, there was speculation everywhere as to whether this is a good idea or not. As the Hollywood Reporter noted, “In the stories I love, I don’t want every blank filled in. I want to know there is a history, but I don’t kneed to know every page of it. Star Wars is an ensemble piece. It is greater than the sum of its part…Yoda is a spice that helps flavor the great stew; he’s not a whole meal.”
Vulture also wondered if Boba Fett could get his own movie, which is actually something quite a number of fans have wanted for years as well. They also suggested the backstory of the Millennium Falcon, and there is indeed a novel that details the ship’s history.
There’s certainly plenty of characters in the Star Wars universe, and plenty of room in cyberspace to speculate and pontificate about them as well, so be prepared for plenty more opinion pieces and arm chair quarterbacking as the new Star Wars films inch closer to their proposed 2015 launch.
