Early reactions to Pacific Rim are in

As long time TG readers know, we’ve been following the movie Pacific Rim pretty closely over the last few months. It’s Guillermo Del Toro’s first film since Hellboy II in 2008, and Warner Brothers is also hoping it will become another big franchise for the studio.

Apparently it’s just been test screened and there have been some early reactions already, via Twitter of course.

Having been to a few test screenings myself, I know no matter how many documents they make you sign there’s going to be reviews on the ‘Net no matter what. In fact, one time I went to a test screening, it took me about half an hour to get home, and by the time I turned on my computer at my apartment there were already at least five reviews posted on the movie.

So what’s the early first word on Pacific Rim? Well, this movie is practically custom made for geeks, and the reviews on Collider were pretty positive. Rian Johnson from the movie Looper tweeted, “Go into Pacific Rim prepared to be transmogrified into a 12 year old. And then to pee your pants with joy. I love it so much.”

Other tweet reactions? One raved that the flick is “pretttttty cool” another told us, “it is amazing.” There was also a review posted on imdb that called it “overall probably the best summer monster movie I’ve seen, and out of summer movies in general, falls behind the new Batman series, but that’s about it.” A very important thing to note, thank God, is that Pacific Rim is “not another Transformers clone (re: Battleship). They killed it!”

Aint-It-Cool-News also had two reviews, one very positive, and one that was decent, but not a rave. The review that wasn’t stellar claimed, “I was actually bored at times…The lack of character relationship was tedious and deflating.” Ultimately this reviewer felt “Pacific Rim is an entertaining but flawed film.”

Now this version of the film isn’t complete, there’s still tweaks that need to be made, so always remember this is a work in progress that may still have a ways to go. And one so-so review so far is a pretty good ratio. We’ll know the final verdict closer to Pacific Rim’s July 11 release date, and we’ll certainly be following all developments closely until then.
