One of the things that has always intrigued me, although I personally lack the requisite skills, is origami and other elaborate papercraft work.
I’m also a sucker for anything Star Wars this side of Jar Jar Binks, so you can imagine how excited I was when this tricked-out papercraft X-Wing fighter and Millennium Falcon turned up.
To make the papercraft spaceships even more interesting, they were created using the pages of a Star Wars novel. The papercraft was commissioned by a fan from an artist known as Jodi. The body of the X-Wing is made out of cardboard for the body, with pages from the book layered on the outside. The finished spacecraft is mounted so that it looks like it’s popping out of the Star Wars novel.
The mounting was done using five thin pieces of wire. The artist also created a paper Millennium Falcon from pages of the book that isn’t quite as cool in my opinion. Interestingly, the artist admits to having never watched the films. Clearly, she did a lot of research because the X-Wing is right on from the movies, although the Millennium Falcon isn’t as accurate or cool.
The artist also has some other very impressive paper art on her DeviantArt page. I found the Exorcist Book Sculpture particularly disturbing. Then again, she even has a Harry Potter sculpture for fans of JK Rowling, while building the likenesses of Harry, Hermione, and Ron out of pages of The Deathly Hallows.
