If the name David Goyer seems familiar, that’s probably because he co-wrote Batman Begins and boasts story credits on The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises.
Goyer also penned the screenplay for the upcoming Superman reboot Man of Steel, in addition to writing and directing the big screen adaptations of Blade.
Of course Goyer also wrote the script for the game Call of Duty : Black Ops 2. While promoting his upcoming series, Da Vinci’s Demons, Goyer spoke a bit about writing one of the season’s most anticipated games.
As Goyer told Yahoo News, “The video game industry is still in its relative infancy to film and even relative to television. Usually what happens first is that there are technological advances…[then] the audience demands more and more sophisticated stories…They want to be connected more emotionally with them.”
Goyer said he came aboard halfway through the development of the first Black Ops game, and he liked the complicated structure, along with the game’s cinematic feel. Goyer is also a gamer, and much like Hollywood movies have “script doctors,” Goyer did similar touch up work for the Black Ops game. Since his suggestions and changes went well, he came back to be part of Call of Duty 2 from square one.
Where Assassin’s Creed is also a history lesson as much as it’s an awesome game, Goyer added that with Call of Duty, “There’s nothing wrong with giving people a great piece of entertainment that also makes them think.” Early in the game, you’re working with Manuel Noriega, then you’re fighting him later in the game during the invasion of Panama.
Goyer also wanted the game to be as authentic as possible, or to have what James Cameron called “the veneer of authenticity.” As Goyer added, “The more authentic a game can feel, the more pleasurable the gaming experience.”
Call of Duty 2 is the second most anticipated game of the season, right behind Halo 4. Look for Call of Duty 2 on November 13, which comes hot on the heels of Halo 4 on November 6.
