Sony is assuring gamers that it will make good on its promise to give the PS3 a life of at least 10 years.
It is expected that the PS4 will be unveiled next year, with a release date believed to be in 2014. That would already make it the longest span between a console and its successor.
However, even when the PS4 does launch, Sony will continue support for the PS3, in much the same way that the PS2 continued to receive new titles well after the release of the PS3.
In an interview with Gamespot, Sony hardware marketing VP John Koller said, “A lot of great content is coming. And over the next 2-3 years, the PS3 has got an incredible lineup. We’re going to continue supporting the PS3 for the next few years. Absolutely. And we’re going to continue supporting it not only that long, but as long as there is a development spigot that’s running hot.”
The notion that the PS3 will continue to receive support is highlighted by the fact that Sony is releasing a new version of the console for the 2012 holiday season. The “super slim” model proves that Sony has no plans to scale back on the PS3 any time soon.
The Xbox 360, meanwhile, is starting to look outdated thanks to an onslaught of rumors about its successor, leading to a wide belief that the Xbox 720 will be unveiled in 2013 and then released at the end of the year.
