It may be three years away, but there’s no doubt the next Avengers movie will be the genre event of the year when it hits theaters on May 1, 2015.
Before then, of course, we’ll see a number of sequels from the Marvel family tree that interconnect with The Avengers, like Iron Man 3, Thor: The Dark World and Captain America: The Winter Soldier.
This is what’s being called Marvel’s Phase Two, and Collider just ran an interview with Captain America himself, Chris Evans, about the next movie. Evans hinted that certain concepts cut out of The Avengers could wind up in in the next Captain America flick.
What was axed from The Avengers “was good stuff,” Evans said, “but it all felt like that was his story. It is a different movie. With the Avengers there was so much to cram in… it was a long movie anyway. I think making it any longer would have just been exhausting.”
Collider points out that there’s a scene cut from The Avengers that wound up online where Steve Rogers is trying to adjust to modern day. It’s an emotional moment where he goes through files of his friends that died, and he’s also thinking about his girl Peggy Carter, who’s still alive.
Collider called it “a doozy alternate opening to the film,” as well as a “pretty great scene,” but they soon had to remove it at the request of Marvel.
“A lot of that stuff [that was cut] is for Captain America 2,” Evans continues. “There are a lot of things that he has to come to terms with. I am excited to see flashes of the first Captain, and to see his memory of what we now know as an audience of who he was.”
Once the next Avengers is ready, it will be interesting to see how it will interconnect with all the Marvel Phase Two sequels. The next Captain America is due for release on April 4, 2014, right before Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, which is due May 23, 2014. But as we recently reported, the next monkeys take over the world flick apparently won’t be helmed by Rupert Wyatt, who directed Rise of the Planet of the Apes.
Frankly, it’s somewhat bizarre to see so many genre films experiencing difficulty with their productions lately, and the upcoming Planet of the Apes sequel may be the next geek flick in trouble. Deadline reports that Wyatt’s possible exit could be similar to why Gary Ross left the Hunger Games. Ross didn’t want to be under pressure to meet a tight deadline, and Wyatt is also reportedly uncomfortable with having to meet his Memorial Day release date.
Whoever ends up directing the new Apes film, well, it seems as if Fox likes the current script which was recently turned in to the studio. Rise definitely beat the odds, reinventing one of Fox’s most important franchises, so let’s hope Fox keeps the quality consistent on this generation’s ape series.
