Unplugging: The soundtracks of Fall

This Fall heralds the advent of many new releases, including the highly anticipated Quentin Tarantino-produced film The Man With The Iron Fists, the directorial debut from RZA (aka Samurai Apocalypse).

Co-written by Eli Roth, the movie hits theaters November 2. Until then, we can look forward to the incredible soundtrack coming our way October 23 via Soul Temple/STAX/Red Distribution. The soundtrack will feature performances from Wu-Tang mates Ghostface Killah, Raekwon and Method Man. Additionally, we can also anticipate some tracks featuring Talib Kweli, Kanye West, The Black Keys and more.

While on the subject of soundtracks, the musical accompaniment to the upcoming film Lawless, featuring Shia Labeouf, Gary Oldman and Tom Hardy, has drawn in attention because of the film’s scoring done by Nick Cave, as well Dirty Three violinist Warren Ellis. Plus, 3 tracks on the album features former Screaming Trees and Queens of the Stone Age vocalist Mark Lanegan.

His contributions to the soundtrack include a cover alongside Cave and Ellis of the Velvet Underground’s “White Light/ White Heat,” Link Wray’s “Fire and Brimstone,” and Captain Beefheart’s “Sure ‘Nuff ‘N Yes I Do.” The album also features tracks by Willie Nelson, Ralph Stanley, Emmylou Harris, and various covers by Lanegan.

The red-headed priestess, Melisandre, on “Game of Thrones,” is played by one Carice van Houten, who is on the verge of releasing her debut album See You on the Ice. From the Netherlands, van Houten has co-starred in familiar films such as Valkyrie, Repo Man and Intruders.

See You on the Ice features a guest appearance by Antony Hegarty on the track, “Particle of Light.” Hegarty is an English singer, composer and visual artist, affiliated with the music groups Antony and the Johnsons as well as Hercules and Love Affair. In return for Hegarty’s contribution to her track, van Houten appeared in Antony and the Johnsons’ latest video for the track, “Cut the World.”

The upcoming Repo Man tribute soundtrack will hit stores on September 18th by way of Laundromat Records. As a little taste of what to expect, Those Darlins’ cover of Iggy Pop’s “Repo Man” has been released as an exclusive iTunes advance single.

The female take on Iggy Pop’s original version gives the tune freshness, while keeping every bit of raw and raucous attitude. Recorded in the same studio where they finished their last full-length album Screws Get Loose, Those Darlins were able to crank out a cover that does the original version much justice. The news of the iTunes advance single comes to the group after their very first European tour and a summer of touring alongside Best Coast.

Jermaine Clement and Bret McKenzie, the masterminds behind the HBO shoe Flight of the Conchords, have reunited in promotion of Cure Kids, a New Zealand charity. The duo released a benefit song “Feel Inside (And Stuff Like That)” along with a corresponding Youtube video.

Created specifically for Red Nose Day: Comedy for Cure Kids, the video has since gone viral. Set up in the format of an old Flight of the Conchords episode, Bret and Jermaine’s familiar meeting with Murray segues into the duo interviewing schoolchildren in New Zealand.

The information Bret and Jermaine gathered from the children turned into a performance of “Feel Inside (And Stuff Like That,” featured at the end of the video. Several other artists collaborated on the recording and were featured in the video as well, such as Peter Ulrich, Nathan King, PNC, Boh Runga, Zowie, Savage, and more.
