Blu-ray is ready for Avengers, Cabin in the Woods

At the moment, Joss Whedon is on top of the world with the incredible success of The Avengers, but I was also hoping Cabin in the Woods, which he co-wrote with Drew Goddard, would do better.

The movie did fine as far as the horror film market goes, but I was really hoping it would lead a bigger revival for the genre, though its cult status will ultimately increase over the next few years.

Now the news has hit that there’s an official home video release date for The Avengers, as well as Cabin in the Woods, which will be September 25 and September 18, respectively.

While The Avengers Blu-Ray, DVD, and VOD should add a ton of cash to the already sky-high pile, I’m curious to see how Cabin in the Woods will do in its secondary run.

Many times if people aren’t totally energized to head over to the theaters, they of course wait for the Blu-Ray or DVD, and a huge amount of money can come flying in from the audience that chose to wait it out.

When Peter Jackson’s King Kong came out on DVD, it added $100 million more to its gross, and as one Jackson intimate explained to me, it showed where the rest of the audience was for the film.

Obviously, there will be plenty of Avengers fanatics willing to buy the insane box set that features The Avengers Blu Ray along with Captain America, Iron Man I and II, and The Incredible Hulk. This box set will sell for a sweet $153.30 on the same day you can buy The Avengers as a single Blu-Ray / DVD.

Still, as a major fan of the horror genre, it was very refreshing to see an original horror film that represented what genre flick should be: an exhilarating roller-coaster ride. So here’s to hoping that many will find Cabin in the Woods to be a horror film that’s not a tired reboot or sequel, but rather, a welcome change of pace.
