There are some auto enthusiasts out there who would never consider the Mazda MX-5 (aka Miata) when shopping for new car because it lacks the horsepower many sports cars offer.
However, anyone who has ever driven a Miata or a Mazda MX-5 on the racetrack knows that the lightweight and superior handling of Mazda’s little roadster means you don’t need as much power.
Extra power isn’t something even the most ardent among the Miata faithful would pass up given the chance to improve the MX-5. Then again, Mazda is showing off a new version that will surely get sports car enthusiasts excited at the Goodwood Festival of Speed.
Yes, the auto manufacturer had its MX-5 GT Concept on display at the festival, and the little roadster is a very impressive vehicle, to say the least.
The concept car – inspired by Mazda’s MX-5 GT race program – is designed by racing Jota Sport and powered by a 2.0-liter 205 horsepower naturally aspirated gasoline engine. That engine is mated to the factory six-speed gearbox, and the car boasts improved handling thanks to adjustable suspension and a carbon fiber front splitter. The car also features a rear diffuser and a trunk spoiler to balance out the aerodynamics.
Other tweaks to the concept car include a sport exhaust system with a central exit exhaust pipe, and an interior with slick Recaro seats. The car is targeted at road racers and comes equipped with racing slicks, as well as body colored roll bar hoops behind the seats. The MX-5 GT Concept boasts a top speed of 160 mph and can hit 0-60 in just three seconds.
