Unlike Microsoft, Sony at E3 is all about games

There was a markedly different tone between Sony and Microsoft during yesterday’s pre-E3 media events.

Microsoft spent a great deal of time talking about all sorts of new content partnerships for the Xbox 360 and all the new kinds of entertainment people could watch through the console.

For Sony, though, it wanted to prove that non-gaming content is completely secondary. It showed off a littany of new intellectual property, including:

– Beyond: Two Souls, a compelling story-driven game that looks highly ambitious and clearly takes advantage of the bleeding-edge graphical capabilities of the PS3

– Playstation All-Stars Battle Royale, a Super Smash Bros-style game that can be played on both the PS3 and the Playstation Vita

As for entertainment content, Sony noted that Hulu Plus and Crackle would be heading to the Playstation Vita, but that was about all the time it spent on the subject of video streaming.

Several months ago, Sony changed the name of its online service on the PS3, PSP, and Playstation Vita from the Playstation Network to the “Sony Entertainment Network.”

However, last night, there was only one reference to the latter. Sony continued to refer to all online services through its game devices as the Playstation Network.

Sony also wanted to ensure that the Vita took center stage, showing off a new Assassin’s Creed title for the device and announcing that Call of Duty would be coming to the Vita. It also said numerous PS One Classics would be making their way via digital download.
