Konami will be releasing a new Castlevania game on the Nintendo 3DS.
As we go from the final weeks leading up to E3, to the final days, we start to make the transition from speculation to fact.
Companies that are afraid of being overshadowed at the show typically tip their fare just ahead of E3. The latest tidbit to make its way to the forefront is that a Castlevania game is in the works for Nintendo’s portable 3DS system.
So, confirming earlier speculation, Konami has made it official. Castlevania: Lords of Shadow – Mirror of Fate will be similar to the namesake title that launches on consoles back in 2010.
There will be a very robust combat mechanic, and it appears to hang on to the series roots with a sidescrolling platformer presentation.
Although the Castlevania franchise is now 25 years old and has lived on every major platform since the NES, it still remains largely a niche franchise, something that has allowed it to keep its unique storylines and aesthetic appeal through to this day. The 3DS desperately needs strong third-party support, and it needs that support to include ambitious games that push the 3DS to its limits. A Castlevania game could do that.
The problem with the 3DS is that it also needs to prove to consumers that there is a reason to own both a portable gaming device and a smartphone.
This year’s E3 will not have a lot of mobile games, but it will most likely have a lot fewer of the multi million-dollar console games that we’re all used to.
