The Dark Knight-Star Trek guessing game

Hollywood can be quite fanatic about trying to hide the secrets of big, upcoming blockbusters.

Spoilers, along with piracy, are obviously a big concern, because if a big movie, like The Dark Knight Rises, ever gets leaked on a big scale, it’s all over for the industry. After all, look what happened with Napster and the music business.

Then again, The Avengers is the biggest movie in the world right now, but it’s nowhere near the top of the list of most pirated movies (yet), and if an audience doesn’t want something spoiled, it will avoid spoilers until they can actually see the movie themselves on the big screen.

At the same time, it’s always fun to try and hold up our gifts, shake ’em around, and hold ’em up to the light to try and see what’s inside before Christmas morning, right? And speculating what a movie could be like before it hits theaters can obviously be a lot of fun.

Collider recently did a series of stories about trying to figure out spoilers from the Dark Knight and Amazing Spider-Man toys, and there are a few potential clues the toys did reveal, such as what the vehicles and weapons will look like.

And Christian Bale also told Collider with the fans trying to figure things out from the trailers: “Maybe some people are seeing things and they don’t know what they’re looking at. It’s quite interesting to watch and hear what people think we’re doing. You look and go, ‘That’s not what we’re doing. But never mind, let’s let people think that’s what we’re doing.'”

And screenwriter David S. Goyer, who wrote The Dark Knight Rises with Christopher and Jonathan Nolan, recently told Empire: “The final scene of The Dark Knight Rises is exactly [the] scene we talked about [when Christopher Nolan and I started the trilogy with Batman Begins]. It remained completely unchanged. We both knew in our hearts that we were onto something special. I have to tell you, having finally seen everything strung together a little while ago and seeing that scene, I got a complete lump in my throat.”

I can’t imagine what would drive Goyer to the verge of tears, nor would I spoil the surprise even if I knew. Now we’ll all know how the last Dark Knight movie turns out when it’s released on July 20, but we’re going to have to still wait a bit for the next Star Trek movie, especially with the big question on everyone’s mind: Who the hell’s the villain?

Star Trek 2 is hitting theaters on May 17, 2013, and we should definitely know who the villain is by then, just not any time soon. As Simon Pegg, who plays Scotty, told The Telegraph, “It’s not Khan. That’s a myth. Everyone’s saying it is, but it’s not. I think people just want to have a scoop. It annoys me – it’s beyond the point to just ferret around for spoilers all the time to try to be the first to break them.”
