Check out the technology that’s going to be powering the anticipated revival of Simcity.
The last title in the franchise, Simcity 4, was released in 2003, and was developed by Maxis, a company that will forever be known as the team behind all things Sims.
Simcity has a storied legacy that dates back more than two decades. The new entry was revealed at the Game Developers Conference earlier this month.
And now developer Maxis has released a video showing just how much more powerful the game engine will be this time around, which is of course to be expected.
The new engine is called “GlassBox” and will be able to offer a truly immersing experience. For example, pollution from things like coal plants will now start to develop a lasting effect, though their positive benefits will be accurately represented as well.
And that’s just one of what could be thousands of different processes happening and being calculated at the same time. To be specific, it’s possible for tens of thousands of what Maxis calls “agents” to be running concurrently at any given time.
The new title will allow players to build winding roads, among many other highly customizable options that were simply not possible in 2003. There will also be an online multiplayer mode.
The Simcity franchise was one of EA’s cash cows, but it was usurped by the even more popular “The Sims” series. Since the original title in that franchise was released, the life simulation game has eaten up all of Maxis’s resources. Now it finally has time to go back to Simcity.
Check out the video above, but note that all the graphics are just placeholders, which will obviously improve further down the development pipeline.
