Some thoughts on the upcoming Hasbro game movies

We’ve covered the whole games and theme park rides being turned into movies phenomenon quite a bit here on TG, and we just reported on the recent development hell Stretch Armstrong has been caught up in.

As you may recall, Hasbro had a deal in place at Universal to develop games and toys, but that relationship turned rocky with Oujia put in turn around, and the upcoming film version of Battleship, the current film geek whipping boy, is also going to have to overcome a lot of skepticism.

When Oujia looked dead in the water, reports surfaced on Collider was working on the script, and Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz (Tron Legacy) also took a pass at it as well. At last report, Ouija still doesn’t have a studio after losing its Universal deal.

The planned movie version of Monopoly also has a promising team up of Ridley Scott directed a screenplay by Larry Karaszewski and Scott Alexander (1408, The People Vs. Larry Flynt).

And now Entertainment Weekly reports Adam Sandler is taking over Candy Land, which was transferred from Columbia to Unviersal, with Kevin Lima (Enchanted) directing.

Robert Smigel, who wrote the Star Trek “Get a life!” skit for SNL and who also penned a comedic version of the Green Lantern that Jack Black was going to star in, will be writing a new script for it, taking over from the Kung Fu Panda 2 team of Jonathan Aibel and Glenn Berger.

”

Aibel told EW that their take on it would be “Lord of the Rings, but set in a world of candy.” It’s not clear if Sandler’s version will follow in this vein, but he will be starring in the film, and producing through his company, Happy Madison.
