Sega’s Sonic returns in all its 2D glory



Sega’s iconic blue hedgehog will make its triumphant 2D return in Sonic the Hedgehog 4 Episode II – which is slated to go live in 2012.

Yes, Sonic is set to continue his epic journey on XBLA and PSN. The game will also run on a number of mobile platforms, including the iPhone, Tegra-powered Android devices and Windows Phone 7.

“Armed with all-new character animations and a completely reworked physics engine, Episode II will expand the Sonic 4 storyline with new areas to speed through and new challenges to face,” Sega exec Haruki Satomi confirmed in an official statement.

“Fans have been eagerly anticipating the next episode in Sonic’s new side-scrolling adventure, and [we have] been listening closely to their feedback. Armed with all-new character animations and a completely reworked physics engine, Episode II will expand the Sonic 4 storyline with new areas to speed through and new challenges to face.”



Satomi added that Sega and Nvidia were working “closely together” to develop an even more enhanced version of Sonic the Hedgehog 4 Episode II for Tegra 3, the world’s first quad-core mobile processor.



The popular Sonic franchise kicked off in 1991 with the release of Sonic the Hedgehog on Sega Genesis.





Sonic the Hedgehog 2, which launched in 1992, bolstered the overall size and speed of the game and was ranked the second best-selling Genesis game of all time.
