Gamepro becomes latest magazine casualty

Gamepro, one of the longest running video game magazines, has ceased its operations effective immediately.

In addition, the Gamepro website will be shut down in a matter of days.

On Gamepro.com, the publication released this statement: “Thank you for your loyalty, support, and participation in the GamePro.com community. At noon on December 5, 2011, the U.S. version of GamePro online will shut down as an independent site. GamePro will become part of PCWorld.com, offering gaming news, reviews, and how-tos from the PCWorld team. Thank you to the entire GamePro staff for their hard work and dedication.”

Regrettably, this announcement doesn’t come as much of a surprise, as the print media industry is only a shadow of what it used to be. Many publications like Gamepro have been shuttered, while other publishing companies, like Ziff Davis, have been reduced to online-only business models.

The only major video game magazines that remain in business are Playstation: The Official Magazine, the Official Xbox Magazine, Nintendo Power, and PC Gamer, all of which used to be managed separately but are all now published by Future Publishing.

Gamepro had just shifted its strategy to become a quarterly publication instead of a monthly one, but that plan simply did not accomplish anything.

So the November issue you see on newsstands now will be the last Gamepro issue you’ll ever see. The magazine’s impressive 22-year history ends just like that.
