DC has announced a new CGI television series known as Beware the Batman.
The official announcement was made by Sam Register, Warner Bros. executive VP for Creative Affairs at the MIP Junior conference in Cannes.
He talks a lot about cool DC stuff, and tries to be educational, but the big news for genre media fans is the summary of the DC animation block which will air on the Cartoon Network – starting with the new Green Lantern animated series in January 2012.
According to Register, the block will include new claymation Batman shorts and Plastic Man animated shorts from Aardman.
Meanwhile, the creator behind My Little Pony (Lauren Faust) is working on a series of animated shorts teaming Wonder Girl, Batgirl and Supergirl under the auspices of Super Best Friends Forever.
There is also a series of Doom Patrol animated shorts in production, while the block will host a series of behind-the-scenes videos and special interviews.
DC Nation, slated to run for at least three years on Cartoon Network, will debut in spring 2012 with Young Justice and Green Lantern: The Animated Series. And as noted above, Beware the Batman will be replacing Brave and the Bold as Warner’s Batman animated series.
Interestingly enough, it is slated to feature the same sort of CGI animation seen in previews for the Green Lantern: The Animated Series.
Batman’s usual sidekick, Robin, will be traded out for a female ninja-type character, while a dark-haired Alfred is given a gun and appears on the street along with the duo.
The show will attempt to mix obscure, rarely-seen villains along-side the classic Batman costumed freaks.
Green Lantern is scheduled to appear on the Cartoon Network in January, with Beware the Batman hitting TV screens sometime in 2013 along with the other announced titles.
