Strike Entertainment has released a clip from its upcoming remake of the classic 1950’s sci-fi startle flick, The Thing, which is actually an adaptation of the short story Who Goes There? written by by John W. Campbell.
There was another adaptation made in 1982 by John Carpenter, which is the version most modern audiences are probably familiar with. However, the new film will likely draw from all three of these sources.
It’s a solid scene, and shows us just how the monster is going to be treated for this film. As per recent custom, we will likely get to see very little of the actual monster at any given time. Flashes and shadows in the darkness are the extent of the monster visuals.

Antarctica: an extraordinary continent of awesome beauty. It is also home to an isolated outpost where a discovery full of scientific possibility becomes a mission of survival when an alien is unearthed by a crew of international scientists. The shape-shifting creature, accidentally unleashed at this marooned colony, has the ability to turn itself into a perfect replica of any living being. It can look just like you or me, but inside, it remains inhuman. In the thriller The Thing, paranoia spreads like an epidemic among a group of researchers as they’re infected, one by one, by a mystery from another planet. Paleontologist Kate Lloyd (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) has traveled to the desolate region for the expedition of her lifetime. Joining a Norwegian scientific team that has stumbled across an extraterrestrial ship buried in the ice, she discovers an organism that seems to have died in the crash eons ago. But it is about to wake up. When a simple experiment frees the alien from its frozen prison, Kate must join the crew’s pilot, Carter (Joel Edgerton), to keep it from killing them off one at a time. And in this vast, intense land, a parasite that can mimic anything it touches will pit human against human as it tries to survive and flourish.
From the official summary, it seems like the movie will be covering the beginning of the story, where Carpenter’s version starts in the middle. If you recall, the scientists in the 1982 hit (Which stared Kurt Russell and Wilford Brimley) found the base full of bodies, and discovered the ice already broken open. In this clip we see the creature break from the ice. It’s not quite a prequel, however, since the creature seems to have a much different nature – If I remember correctly, the monster in the Carpenter version was more of a body-snatcher than a shape-shifter.
The Thing stars Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Joel Edgerton, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, and Ulrich Thomsen. It hits theaters on October 14 , 2011.
